Pollard Windows helps two green homes win the first Home Sweet Home Competition

Burlington, Ontario. April 8, 2010: The Home Sweet Home Competition announced the founding winners for each of the four categories and Pollard Windows was a proud partner with two of the four winners. The four winners and their respective categories were: Williamsburg Estates’ Ontario Green Home (Production Home), Habitat for Humanity Mississauga Streetsville Build (Affordable Home), Rudd Residence (Custom Home) and REEP House for Sustainable Living (Renovated Home).

The Home Sweet Home Competition, presented by OntarioGreenSpec.ca, aims to recognize the people and products that come together to build or renovate “sweet” homes across Ontario. Unlike other “green” home awards in the province, this award looks at each home as a whole rather than the different sectors (design, construction, landscaping, etc.). The Competition distinguishes homes that have exceptional ecological performance but also realizes that today’s “green” homes are more than just environmentally superior, they also include consideration in the following three areas: Healthy & Comfortable; Efficient & Economical; and Ethical.

The winner of the Production Home category, the Williamsburg Estates’ Ontario Green Home, was built through a partnership between Reid’s Heritage Homes and Schlegel Urban Development. This home is a 2,755 sq. ft brick model home, located within Williamsburg Estates in Kitchener. It targeted LEED Platinum and ENERGY STAR and this home is highly water and energy efficient, features many local materials, including Pollard Windows’ Advantage Line windows, and provides a quiet, comfortable, healthy living space.

Habitat for Humanity Mississauga won in the Affordable Home category with its Streetsville Build home. Pollard Windows was a proud supplier in this project, where the goal was to use materials that were affordable but would keep the maintenance and energy bills at a minimum for the residents who can least afford to use up their low monthly income on such bills. One of the most impressive features noted on the home is specific to the windows, which were Pollard Windows’ Advantage Line. The siting of the house and placements of the windows allowed for optimal shading in summer and passive solar heat gain in winter and maximum use of free natural light and fresh air.

Both winning projects used Pollard Windows’ Advantage Line all vinyl windows and doors. Ideal for replacement or new construction applications, Advantage Line windows use durable and maintenance free vinyl on both the interior and exterior. The exterior is available in one of three standard colours, several designer colours or virtually any custom colour imaginable. Many different design options are available including standard or custom grill designs and brickmould.

About Pollard Windows

Pollard Windows was founded by a young visionary with a strong work ethic. Norman Pollard arrived in Canada in 1947 ready to embrace a new life for himself and his family. A skilled carpenter, he taught his wife and children everything he knew about woodworking. And in 1948, the family business was born. The Pollard formula for success was simple: work hard, reinvest in new technology, and give customers more for their money. Today, Pollard operates out of a 300,000 sq. ft. plant and is recognized as a leader in window and door manufacturing technology.

Pollard Windows is committed to the environment and is a member of both the Canadian and U.S. Green Building Councils® and is a long standing participant in the ENERGY STAR program. It’s products are engineered to be ‘GREEN’. The durable vinyl exterior can be easily recycled and ensures the window will last for years to come. The high energy performance not only lowers heating and cooling costs but also the amount of green house gases that are released into the environment. Pollard Windows has been involved in many LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects across North America which have received the highest certification, Platinum, under this program. Pollard Windows serves both the new construction and replacement window and door markets.
