Pollard Windows – Part of the First LEED®-H Platinum Rated Home in Canada
Burlington, Ontario. June 26, 2007: Canadian window manufacturer, Pollard Windows Inc., has helped create one of the greenest homes in North America. The Enviorwise&tm; house which is located in Guelph, Ontario, has recently achieved Platinum status - the highest green rating of the U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC). Evaluated under the USGBC’s LEED-H program, a system for measuring a home’s eco-friendly characteristics, the building has garnered 100+ LEED points, the highest score in its category in North America at the time of the Grand Opening, making it a model of energy efficient and environmentally responsible design. According to the USGBC, only six homes have won Platinum status. The organization cites the Guelph, Ontario residence as the most recent and the first and only one in Canada.
Pollard’s Liberty Collection windows were used throughout the award-winning project. “Our goal was to provide the builder with a product that would be striking in appearance, provide the best insulation, and contribute to the coveted Platinum rating,” said Karen Pollard-Josling, the company’s marketing manager. The builder, Reid’s Heritage Homes, an Ontario-based construction company, were happy with how the windows added to the project. “Pollard Windows helped enhance the curb appeal of the home while achieving a high level of energy efficiency,” said Andrew Oding, Reid’s Manager of Product Development.
The Liberty Collection windows specified for this project consisted of two panes of Solarban 60® Low-E (low emissivity) glass filled with insulating argon gas. The Low-E coating restricts the flow of heat to the outdoors and allows naturally warming solar heat in. And according to Pollard-Josling, the Low E Insulated Glass units are 117% more effective at centre of glass than standard clear insulating glass at preventing the pass through of ultraviolet rays which can damage paintings, curtains, furniture and other objects in a home. The lead free vinyl cladding is weather-resistant and will not flake, peel, rust, or corrode, making the windows maintenance free. Pollard-Josling also points out that condensation is reduced and heat retention enhanced by the warm-edge intercept spacer bar, an essential feature that contributes to the windows’ superior energy performance.
Natural Resources Canada states that in “an average Canadian Home, about 30 percent of heat loss is through the windows and doors. Installing energy efficient windows can reduce home energy costs by seven to 12 percent”. “We’re always pushing the envelope on energy efficient design”, said Pollard-Josling. “I look forward to the day when a home like Reid’s is not exceptional but rather the standard in residential construction. We plan to play an important role in that future.”
